What Wine Is Well Balanced and a Good Price? It has to be Portuguese Wine!

26 January 2015 17:38

When it comes to a country that produces velvety wines that are well balanced, and yet affordable perhaps Portugal is not the first country that springs to mind! However, according to the New York Times, Portuguese wine provides a "truly world class drinking experience".

During Gottlieb's trip to Portugal he discovered the uniqueness of Portuguese wine. With many grape varieties unique to the country the wine is easy on the palette whilst bursting forth with flavour!

Why is Portuguese wine such a culinary delight?

The climate in Portugal is ideal for growing grapes. In summer it is very hot, with very little rainful. This enables grapes to flourish without becoming too sweet. And with a variety of microclimates Portugal is able to produce a large variety of wines that would be welcomed by any wine enthusiast. You will have enjoyed port, but the wines from this country are equally as pleasurable, and also outstanding value.

Why is Portuguese wine such good value for money?

Back in November 2014 thedrinksbusiness.com described Portuguese wine as "the best value for money for its quality". Their research found that found that Portuguese wine was well-made and yet highly affordable. And the wine has been compared favourably to Burgundy wines, Malbecs and Riojas.

So if you are unfamiliar with Portuguese wine we would encourage you to try a few bottles! Why not try an Azulejo red for only £8.70, or an Alvarinho White  for only £10.86. Both Glug team favourites and superior quality wine at outstanding prices, you'll find a case of Glug Wine will make the long winter evenings more bearable.
